What qualifies as personal property?

Personal property is any movable, tangible asset that isn't land or permanently attached to a building, and it makes up the category our appraisers value for estates, taxes, insurance, and legal matters throughout Oklahoma.

In an estate context, this covers a broad range of household and collectible items rather than real estate itself. If an item can be removed from a home without altering the structure, it typically qualifies as personal property.

What Counts as Personal Property

Common categories included in an estate personal property appraisal:

• Fine art and paintings, including oil, acrylic, watercolor, and mixed-media works
• Jewelry and watches, from loose diamonds and gemstones to precious metal pieces and timepieces
• Antiques, furniture, and decorative arts such as period pieces, textiles, and ceramics
• Firearms and militaria, including historical artifacts and collections
• Coins, currency, and bullion, including rare and numismatic pieces
• Vehicles, tools, machinery, and household electronics not permanently installed

What Doesn't Count

Items permanently affixed to real estate, such as built-in cabinetry or fixtures, are generally treated as real property rather than personal property and fall outside a contents appraisal. Intangible assets like stocks, bonds, patents, and copyrights are also excluded; while they're technically "property," they require a different type of valuation entirely.
